In the past I was able to navigate Youtube and I stayed mostly in the sane section, but lately I've been ending up in areas of Youtube that make me wonder. Case in the point I submit for your review exhibit A.

Yeah so anyhow... can some one please tell me what is going on here? What is a Hetalia?

Oh my goodness. I just realized this is gay anime isn't it? How in the world did I end up in the gay section of Youtube?! I was looking at videos of Star Wars and Secret of NIMH clips.

Axis Powers Hetalia is an anime/manga where every country in the world is anthropomorphized into hot guys (there are a few of them who are girls, but about 98% of the cast is guys). Each character's personality is based off of national stereotypes, and their relationships with one another are based on historical relations, though it very much sugar coats and glosses over "sensitive" topics. Most people who read/watch Hetalia aren't doing it for the history; they're doing it for the humor and fanservice.

The reason why I know so much about it is because, along with the cartoon Adventure Time, it was one of those things where I thought it was really cute and wanted it to become a special interest. But even though I watched the entire first season of 52 5-minute shorts, it just didn't click with me for some reason.

For me, YoutubePoop is the weird section. Very little of those videos are actually funny.

The gimmick in Hetalia is that all of the characters are humanized versions of real-life countries. For example, the three main characters are humanized versions of Germany, Italy and Japan. The characters aren't from those countries - they are those countries. It's part of a niche genre in anime/manga called "moe anthropomorphism" where concepts, inanimate objects and animals are drawn as attractive humans with only some parts of their costumes as references to how they originally looked. For example, a humanized version of Pikachu might be drawn to resemble a cute anime girl with a headband that has Pikachu ears on it, rosy cheeks and a yellow outfit with brown stripes on it (and maybe a tail too).

Two sections that are undeniably popular yet baffle me are the "Chipmunk Covers of Pop-Songs Clearly Done by Grown Ass Adults" & the "Hometown Hoodfights At Waffle House/Drug Deals Gone Bad." They sincerely confuse me in their popularity.
