I am amazed that they gave us sooo much freedom and sooo little direction. So far, the little sprite floating around hasn't told me what to do at all. I can select my own shop hours (as long as I don't overlap midnight), I can buy and sell whatever stock is available, set the prices, and there are huge open spaces in town, which I assume will be populated with some impacts from my actions in-game, only after I make significant progress. Sorry for the run-on sentence. The house is cute, and the layout is compact and practical. I am stoked for more Hometown Story this evening! I can't wait to unlock some kind souls to be in my neighborhood!

Hey, please post some more if you get a chance. I'm still kind of on the fence as I've heard some bad things.

Hmm ... I haven't read any reviews yet. What are your concerns? So far, my only complaint is that I want an actual instruction manual to tell me how to interpret the shop ledger and some of the icons on the screen. The majority of the time I have spent playing so far has been learning the ropes, so to speak. I am sure there will be a detailed wiki or FAQ posted online soon, but I'm having a little competition with myself to try to figure out the icons and a good strategy on my own before I look anything up. I did that with my first Harvest Moon game when I was little, so I should be able to achieve the same at my age, lol.
There are separate paths to make progress, in the social/town aspect of the game and in the shopping/shopkeeping aspect of it. The emphasis, at least early on, is more on the latter than the former. That said, even if I do nothing but wander around town, I still seem to trigger the occasional NPC interaction.

Today I am posting about the Ledger, part of the shop. Tomorrow I will try to post something more social/town-building related.
First, the ledger gets less emphasis than I'm used to in Harvest Moon. Some people will probably want to keep their own spreadsheet, while others will play casually and play it by ear, so to speak. The ledger is the happy medium between these two options. It resides on the bookshelf. Ignore it at your own risk, you won't be forced to watch it update every day.
Ledger tab 1- financial statement. Self-explanatory. $$$! You will know at a glance what your daily haul was.
Ledger tab 2- (icon of a ball rolling off your stock) ranking by volume of items sold off. The ledger ignores customer requests. It tells you when you've been selling a lot of tomatoes and very few hammers.
Ledger tab 3- (icon of a ball rolling into your stock) ranking by volume of items acquired. I find a lot of weeds on the ground, so my #1 item is WEED XD. The ledger tells you what you've bought/found/produced.
Ledger tab 4- Just another copy of tab 2, filtered to show only what you sold to males.
Ledger tab 5- Just another copy of tab 2, filtered to show only what you sold to females.
Ledger tab 6- customers. The ledger tells you who your regular customers are.
Please, someone correct me if I got something wrong. I am figuring this out as I go along.
