too many people are too picky as to who they will take into their arms and whose arms they will fly into. it is like what vincent van gogh said about how “One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul and yet no one ever came to sit by it. Passers-by see only a wisp of smoke from the chimney and continue on their way.”
This is my sadness entirely. I'm not a wealthy person, which matters in this world, but my hearth houses Eta Carinae.
I don't understand this world where it seems that giving and receiving love can be as uncomplicated as just that.
Everything has clauses and conditions, not in reception but in prerequisite.
tl;dr of all the posts: I, as a die-hard mathematician, hate the modern world and all the complications that have arisen in it, and I want a simple life filled with love, community, and immediate purpose. And especially, a wife. In the way that mathematicians traditionally haven't appreciated, given their divorce proceedings.

if one lives long enough, loneliness comes to an end, and one gets why things are the way they are, not as a good thing but as the highly imperfect-by-design thing that this hellworld is. a person you may like or dislike, st. teresa, said the following in confession-
"So many unanswered questions live within me afraid to uncover them — because of the blasphemy — If there be God — please forgive me — When I try to raise my thoughts to Heaven — there is such convicting emptiness that those very thoughts return like sharp knives & hurt my very soul. — I am told God loves me — and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul. Did I make a mistake in surrendering blindly to the Call of the Sacred Heart?"
i dwell on this quote at times-
There is in certain living souls
A quality of loneliness unspeakable
So great it must be shared
As company is shared by lesser beings.
Such a loneliness is mine; so know by this
That in immensity
There is one lonelier than you."
(Theodore Sturgeon- 1918-1985)

I think I've always understood this. What I've wondered is why others don't and why we don't cast off ephemeral differences to come together automatically within a few years of our birth.

You don't disappoint me. You're real and so you live up to the promise of what a human being should be. Until you abandon people in their moment of need you are no hermit to me, you are present in my community.

Holy bejeebers auntblabby , you got some serious depth to you as a person.

Please be careful ..
Am thinking you talk a sacriligious heretic outta selling their soul to the devil.
Even if they had all the world to gain . (WRITTEN TONGUE IN Cheek)

Wonderful quote ... and agrees .

Loves velcro,
The way I see it, auntblabby isn't a true hermit. I may be wrong but I get the basic feeling that he doesn't like the way the world is (perhaps this is my projection) but he has a strong sense of community. He's community oriented but not "community" oriented.
blabby is in the woods but he cares about all of us. I'm in the city and the people I see are just flesh bags bumping into each other with no real sense of connection between them at all unless angered.
He's not thoroughly like Thoreau. He's not a true misanthropist.
