Maybe for the past year or so, I've been having some strange thoughts. They range from sexual, to homosexual, and to violent. I never act on these thoughts, or take them seriously, but still can't shake the feeling that something is off. Please tell me I'm not alone, and what I can do to put them out of my mind.

You are not alone. In this case, your username is absolutely accurate. ;)

These are called "intrusive thoughts". Pretty much everyone has them, not everyone admits to them. The only time they are unusual is when they are coupled with the compulsion to act them out or they really start to disturb you.

Really, the best you can do is not worry about them. Mine sometimes get worse when I'm anxious/depressed, in which case I have to listen to music or do something else to calm down — not because I feel like I will do any of these things, but because they can get a little too much for me at times.

I guess I'm just overreacting, thanks much Inyanook.

I often have thoughts that don't coincide with my intentions, or life values.
They are intrusive, but usually a response to something I've seen or heard, whether I'm aware of it or not.
E.g. After being made aware of an animal cruelty case I will have lots of retaliation/vengeance type thoughts.
Or, in response to watching TV or movies, alot of strange thoughts might arise, without me remembering what stimulated them.
The images/ideas as well as my responses to them can also turn up in dreams, presumably because I need to process them.

No worries. :) I was actually flipping out a little about this and so did some research relatively recently, which is why I was able to answer your question. Not an overreaction at all. It's nice to know you're not one degree of emotional disturbance away from being a serial killer. ;)

Safe to say the majority of people get these sorts of thoughts whether they like them or not. It's not the same as acting out, though, so don't worry about it. I wouldn't share them too much with other people though if I were you.
