Gr 3-5-Alfie lives in a seemingly happy home with his parents, brother, and sister, but his father is always working and yells a lot. Uncle Pete comes to stay with them and gives Alfie attention, including unwanted sexual attention, calling it their ``special secret.'' As Alfie grows into a teen, he is teased about being gay. Finally, he goes to a counselor who tells him he isn't gay and that he just missed his father's love and was taught wrong things by his uncle. The same man talks to Alfie's parents, they stop fighting, and Dad begins to spend time with his son playing ball and camping. Uncle Pete is also confronted, but is forgiven when he cries. Now Alfie is ready to date Nancy, whom he marries, and they have a boy and a girl whom they love a lot. Everything about this book screams fake. The illustrations are flat and garish in their simplicity, lacking any personality or appeal. If the generic illustrations aren't a complete turnoff, the saccharine tone of the writing gives further challenge to credibility. If readers were able to ignore the presentation, there is still the message of the text to choke them. A boy from a dysfunctional family who is abused throughout his childhood and into his teens sees a counselor and everything is suddenly wonderful. Now if everything is pulled together, there is still a problem-the format of a picture book with large print makes this look like a book for preschoolers, but the writing attempt is aimed more at preteens who would scorn such a presentation-and rightly so.

Hmmm... what's SSA? Now, they don't mention it in the children's book we've been discussing here.. well not up front anyway...

So... you can follow MR. Cohen's program and 'cure' yourself of this ill... it REALLY WORKS!
AT least according to him... and all these other people (bear in mind that some of these people are parents who were very concerned about their little Johnny liking 'other boys', or their little Mary liking 'other girls'.
Books like the one we've been discussing here are to help those poor families with their children's affliction.

The book is the tip of the iceberg! The burr under the saddle! A wake up call for every American... better yet!... every person on this EARTH!... right after we douse that insidious torch born about the lies on global warming, that is!

This book is NOT about sexual abuse of children. It is NOT about broken families.
YES, these are mentioned in the text, but the main reason for this book is to convince children and their families that SAME SEX ATTRACTION CAN BE CURED!

It can be cured because SSA is brought about by poor parenting and evil uncles!

Just like smoking... it's not something people start up late in life... it's ALWAYS because a child was wrongly influenced by his/her environment and those evil-doers.. aided and abetted by sloppy, ignorant parents.

So.. all you homos and transgendered folks just line up and get YOUR cure TODAY!

I don't have the link right now, but Something Awful did a review of a children's book written by Julius Streicher. He also wrote two other kids' books, one of which can be found here.

Those are f**ked-up beyond belief.

Hey, I'm kidding around here... I have no idea of anyone's orientation - sexual or navigational - so I was using the word 'you' as a general call out to anyone who fit the bill.

I'm not sure if his cure would work... hmmm, adopted at birth so my birth mommy and daddy were never around to turn me trans... my adopted parents are probably to blame, following Mr. Cohen's logic since I grew up in West Texas and we ain't got no queers there... we run'em all out of town , plus I ain't never had an Uncle Peter.. although I have been approached by some creepy guys during my childhood

My mom just recently passed away so I can't get her involved in my therapy with Mr. Cohen... that just leaves my dad and I don't think he'd like to get involved in all this stuff.

Truly disturbing

You know, that's what bothered me when I read the story (before reading all the comments). I could see how the rest of the story could be... well, not useful, but accurate, in that things like that sometimes happen. But the preoccupation with homosexuality came through strong, and that wasn't right; if the story really was about abuse, it wouldn't have concentrated so much on that aspect.

Those "successful stories" are sad.

It must have been late last year when they introduced that movie about all the different families; the movie had families composed of two lesbians, (&) two homosexual men, (&) multi-cultural, (&) multi-racial, (&) disabled people, (&) the "typical" American family (one man, one wife, ect). The only message it really carried was that all of them were normal, and there was nothing wrong with it.

I remember watching the news; they were showing this school meeting in New Jersey, where the movie had been played for all the students. This woman... I suppose she must have been a mother, but man, I wouldn't have trusted her with children. She looked normal enough; long, thinning, plain brown hair, pulled half back and falling down in scraggly curls; more than a little overweight, wearing a white shirt with pale pink flowers on it - it reminded me of a nurse's shirt; glasses, old-fashioned, but not cat's-eye ones. But she was furious. She was yelling so hard that she was thrown off balance when emphasizing her words; you could see the spit flying. She was making hard gestures with her hands, pointing in tune with her speech. I don't remember exactly what she was saying, only that it was against the movie, specifically the homosexual part; she called it "CRAP!" (In my household, that word is worse than swearing; it one of the few words that I cannot stand either, so I remember that.) I think it was supposed to be inspiring (or that was her intention), but she merely looked silly and sad to me.

I don't like intolerance.

I think it is a book that is trying to teach children that if they are gay it was caused by abuse/pedophilia. Some fundamentalist christians belive that most gays are pedophiles. Whatever it is it seems like it supposed to be homophobic.

"they" say that when a girl gets caught up with the bad boys, its because her dad didn't show that he loved her enough, and was probably abusive etc. and that this can be shown by the type of men she chooses later in life. Of course they(the daughters) could decide they will never want to be caught in another relationship (whatever form that takes) again from any other male and it doesn't happen.
Or when a girl's father is honorable so to speak, and takes good care of his family and children, the daughter is more likely to choose someone who treats her honorably etc.

Women will marry or live with an abusive man like 'Dear Old Dad ' or seek our a man whom they can never trust to be there for them. Incredibly, when they finally find the courage to leave him, more often than not they will become involved with another man just like him!"

And besides, the entire end of the book talks about counseling. I guess you could put a slant on that and say that this book is about how every single counselor is wonderful and helpful, and that you can always trust them to always help you.


And the people who put the comments on that webpage need to study psychology a bit more.
