Here's the story. We got two dogs, both are almost a year old.

The problem(s):
1) They use our house like it's their toilet -and-
2) The little one is a tad too loud for us......

What can we do to rein in these 'problems'?

I don't know what you can do about the noisy dog, but we have a fenced yard and a doggie door for the bathroom thing. Ours only bark when someone's at the door or when they're outside.

If you don't have a yard, pay attention to the dog (and have a leash handy) and when it looks like it's about to go in an inappropriate place, take it outside. When it does its business, give it lots of praise and attention. Try to keep it on a regular feeding/walking schedule.

If you get there too late and the dog has already done it, show your disapproval in a verbal way, firmly but not too harshly. Don't hit your dog. Then take him outside. Try to make the scolding/going out as close to the time of the infraction as possible so that the dog will make the connection between going in the house and your disapproval. And keep on trying. I don't know how long it will take, but keep it up for a while and the dog will eventually get it. Be consistent. and don't forget to praise the dog when he's done something you like.
