flism,
I've tried the foam earplugs before. When I tried to do an at-home silent retreat (terrible idea in a noisy building. After four days of my neighbor's music I went to the CVS down the street and almost went into hysterics as the rush-hour T poured an endless wave of people onto the sidewalk) I got some. But I didn't like the way they felt in my ears. I tried sleeping with them but I move around a bit, and being on my side they felt even worse.
Everything “extra” takes getting use to. In the past, my choice was to either try to fall asleep with loud snoring eminating from multiple people, when getting the proper amount of sleep was crucial, or cut out the noise, get use to the foam in my ear, and get enough sleep. One thing you could try, to keep your face pointed up, is a big puffy pillow. And if you are like me, with so much crap on your bed that you have no room to move around on it, you’ll stay in that position the whole night.
