This is inadvertently going to sound stupid, but what does that phrase really mean, when referring to immorality? Is that simply a matter of, "Don't say anything about anyone without them present to hear it and correct you if necessary"?

It means doing or saying something and the person doesn't know about it when they feel they should.

Gossiping is bad, but when people have a problem with someone they should tell them before going to an authority; give them a chance to correct themselves before starting more problems.

I always thought it meant you shouldn't say slanderous/negative things about a person, basically you shouldn't spread vicious rumors. Of course people do it all the time and other people believe the stupid rumor and spread it further. Once the ball gets rolling it's hard to stop and can ruin an innocent persons reputation and possibly life, as many rumors are hard to impossible to prove wrong.

Like in middle school they spread a rumor that I was gay. There's no way to prove you are or aren't is there? Besides the homophobes bothering me it wasn't a problem really.
