I always get really sad and depressed in the winter to the point where it's hard for me to do basic things like keep up with homework. What's wrong with me?

Think that's fairly common for people in general; it's not an Aspie thing. If you haven't heard of SAD (seasonal affective disorder), try googling it.

But I'm a shut-in, so winter suits me down to the ground. Bring on the cold, dark, misty evenings.

Outdoors is one of the places I escape to for alone time. One of my favorite things to do is sit under a tree and read a book. As it is snowy here in the winter, that's not really possible. So yes, winter depresses me. It means it's more difficult for me to find peace.

I get cabin fever...even though I normally don't spend that much time outside, I like being free to go in and out constantly without having to suit up in a lot of clothes. I get a claustrophobic feeling when I have to stay inside a lot.

But the worst thing is I just stay sleepy all the time, because there's not enough sunlight to wake me up.

It's not an Aspie thing, it's a people thing. It's very common. My solution, learn to ski and snowboard. I do my snow dance every year for winter to come early, stay late and snow snow snow!! :D

I am more in the summer it seems than winter, though it's an all year round thing for me (has been since I was 11)

When the air gets so cold it could kill you in minutes everybody feels depressed. But, yeah, Seasonal Affective Disorder. Lack of sunlight. You can actually get lights that reproduce the effect of the sun.

It must be cold up in Canada.

Tonight, in NYC, it'll probably go down to at least Minus 10 Celsius in the suburbs--more like Minus 6-7 in the City.

I also hate the winter, not so much for the grey sky (even so I like the sun) but it's just the cold that get me, I hate turning the heaters on has I hate the type of hot and dry air that comes from them, I hate the cold, I hate to dress up with a sweater and a big warm jack (I prefer jeans and a polo short sleeve shirt), I hate the snow, and here winter means a lot of rain. So the entire seasons gets me down :-(

Winter doesn't really make me any more depressed...it can be frustrating if it's really cold out or there's a bad snow storm or lots of wind, so I dislike when I feel trapped by the crappy weather since I like to be able to walk around outside and such. It's not so bad if I make sure and dress warm enough though still not as comfortable as walking around in nicer weather. I don't like very hot weather either though so if its really hot and sunny sometimes I also don't end up going out and about when I want to.

It is a separate disorder, not related to Asperger's. It used to be called Seasonal Affective Disorder. I have it. The cure is to get light in the winter time, for example, going to a tanning bed a couple of times a week. I call it going into hibernation mode. Because my yearly cycle (if not treated) is like that of a bear. I would literally sleep 20 hours per day in the winter. It has something to do with the amount of sunlight.

Yeah I probably have it. I've never had an official diagnosis though.

I did a search about this and I guess it has to be a certain type of light, which these SAD lamps emit.

mayo clinic link

Quote:
Ultraviolet light

Light therapy boxes should be designed to filter out harmful ultraviolet (UV) light, but some may not filter it all out. This type of light can cause skin and eye damage. Look for a light therapy box that emits as little UV light as possible. If you have concerns about light therapy and your skin, talk to your dermatologist.

Tanning beds: Not an alternative to light therapy

Some people claim that tanning beds help ease seasonal affective disorder symptoms. But this hasn't been proved to work. Visible light, not the UV light released by tanning beds, is used in light therapy. The type of light released by tanning beds can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer.

Winter weather is often a great excuse for me not to go out and be social. In the summer I feel pressured to go out even though it's broiling hot and sticky and just a short walk to the store makes me want to die.

Personally I hate snow and icy streets, and I don't like it to be too cold (and absolutely not too hot either) but I like that it's dark a lot. I like November a lot, since it's so dark and the snow hasn't fallen yet.

You might have SAD if you're really bothered by it. Apparently there is some light therapy available.
