It's a period piece, I guess, set in the summer of 2000. The narrator Micki, is a 17-year-old girl with mild Aspergers, a few friends, and a very cynical POV on society.
She's extremely routine oriented. Every time she gets off of work(she's a short-order cook in the summer), she always puts together the same kind of burger. Whenever she goes to the convenient store, she always buys a blue raspberry slurpee. Every night that she's at home(occasionally she might sleep over her best friend's house across the street), she always plays a video game, and leaves AIM open.
She has a boyfriend, but she's too scared to sleep with him(low self-esteem).
Her friends are mostly the people in her band(she plays bass, which allows her to blend in, as she's very self-conscious, but loves music too much to avoid the stage altogether). They're all a little weird, so they don't get all bent out of shape when she has her social gaffes.
Her narration occasionally goes off the beaten path, and she frequently questions society in general.
Part of the story comes in flashbacks, where her social life slowly starts to improve a little.
Here's an excerpt from when Micki meets her future best friend Leah-Rosalynd(nicknamed Lelynd):
I didn’t put too much stock in Lelynd when I first met her, to be honest. People have asked me to come over before, but eventually, they get sick of me. Lelynd just asked me weird(at the time) questions.
“You’ve been talking about that movie for a while,” she said when I’d gone on about “Lord of the Flies”, “If I watched the movie with you, would you settle down?”
“Uh, sure we could watch the movie…why are you asking me to settle down?”
“It’s kinda hard to explain. You’re kinda hard to explain, but that’s okay. My parents were hippies. I’ve seen more bloated classic rock dudes onstage than anyone my age. I’ve met a few personally. So I'm different than most kids. In a way, so are you, just on your personality alone. That’s kinda interesting,”
“For a kid around my age, you talk like a grown-up. How old are you, anyway?”
“Twelve going on thirty, my mom says. What about you?”
“Twelve in three weeks. What about my personality?”
“You ramble. You really get into certain things until that’s all you can talk about. Most people like conversation to change, to flow into different subjects. Most people would get annoyed at what you’re doing,”
I blinked a couple times as that big epiphany dawned on me.
“So you’re saying…” I said, “That that’s why everyone at school hates me?”
“I didn’t know everyone at school hated you,” Lelynd said thoughtfully.
“They’ll hate you too if you’re seen at school with me,” I warned her.
