I may get some flak for this, but I would argue that men have to be just as safe as women when out and about alone. If someone puts a gun to your head to rob you, it doesn't really matter what gender you are or how much self defense training you have. I've been mugged before, and had family members who were beaten up by people after their wallets.
you might be amazed to learn that NOT being harassed and ogled on a relatively regular basis when you go out in public by yourself, day or night, can add a great deal to a person's sense of personal safety, and can leave them wonderously free of concern for the need to protect themselves so they can actually go about their day.
since i've lost weight i am much more visible to a greater number of people, especially men--just attracting the notice of more men increases my odds of one of them being a habitual-boundary-tester, verbal harasser, ass-grabber, etc. and being aware of this increased visibility adds to my daily struggle with being able to go out and get what i need to get done for myself without being given a hard time by some a**hole just for being a female alone in public. it's hard to understand if it's not something you experience regularly yourself.
the a**hole guys
are a small minority--i know that they are--but when they're out in public
they are an extremely vocal minority--they make their presence known to you when you are a female alone in public. in some ways, it's like having a target on you--if there happen to be such guys out in public at the same time as you, they will pick you out of a crowd just for being by yourself, because they're just a**holes like that. i just think it would be nice more often to hear one of their buddies tell them to back off or shut their yap, instead of laughing along like it's a big joke or egging them on, which is what often happens if it's a group of younger men.
i'm not trying to give you flack or anything, just something to think about is all.
edit* to add: i don't mean to sound arrogant, i'm not suggesting this happens to me more often than other people because of the way i look--i actually think it has little to do with how i look and more to do with the fact that pretty much every single time i go out in public, unless it's during a visit from my brother/BFF who lives out of town, i am by myself; and if you are by yourself, male or female, you are more vulnerable to bully types.
