Self harm and emo are two different things.
*refrains from calling certain people an ignorant prick*

BTW, what is a "suidice?" :? It's not in my dictionary. Is it a new type of Pokemon?

Triangular_trees explains it quite well. It may make people feel bad, but that's not necessarily our intention in cutting. I know that when I've done it, 99.9% of the time (excluding those times when it was sensory overload-related) it was because of frustration at my own failings, not out of any desire to punish those around me. If I'd been trying to punish people, I would have walked around with my arms showing instead of wearing long sleeves in the heat of summer.

Cutting is a form of stimming - it's done for stress/anxiety management.

Often, though not always, cutting relates to guilt-stress or "infected" stress. People who cut often feel dirty or guilty and feel that cutting or otherwise hurting themselves is punishment that they deserve or that it is something that will cleanse them temporarily.

Quite often, the dirtyness they feel is not of their making but can result from childhood trauma such as molestation.

NO. WE. DON'T.

Most of us, anyway. There are a few people who scratch their arms and then walk around letting everyone see and talking loudly about how much they are suffering. They ruin things for those people who are doing it because of genuine problems and serious mental health issues.

Ha, the last thing I want to do is draw attention to myself when I cut--the professionals can throw you in a mental hospital for a night if they so wish, if they think you aren't mentally "sound" (I had to persuade a doctor that I was indeed "fine" and not suicidal when I needed my thumb stitched up due to an accident--said accident was because I was going to start cutting myself; I pressed too hard because I was "melting", and I completely lost my ability to tell how much pressure I was applying).

Nor do I wish for my mother to know as it upsets her.

Since the aforementioned doctor visit, I actually haven't cut myself for a long time (several months).

People who cut aren't "emo"...they have serious emotional distress that they can't deal with. MOST who cut...don't do it for attention. MOST who cut...keep it hidden from everyone. The ones who DO cut for attention, aren't just attention seeking, it's a cry for help...which means that they are in distress, too.

Some who cut, do it to distract themselves from the emotional pain. By causing physical pain it can divert their attention to something external. Also, some do it if they feel "numb"...seeing blood can make a person feel "alive" again.

Here we go again. "It's for attention" "They cut for attention" No....

I can understand why Who_I_Am is annoyed, given the curcumstances. Sure, some autistics on the spectrum need understanding, so do people like us who abuse ourselves. Whether we are spectrum or not. Maybe some need attention (me not included), but selfharm isn't for that. Try not to put out how you think they/we are so selfish as you percieve us to be, because it's annoying.

Different people cut for different reasons.

I cut because I'm seriously depressed, and I literally have no one to talk to. When I cut,it's a major relief. PLus,I generally like the feeling of it.

I agree with danielismyname. I used to cut, until my dad found out and flipped out. I stopped after that for a while. Any time i would cut myself, i would do it in a spot that was covered or out of the way and unseen. The last thing i would want is for anyone to see it. Its not for other people to look at and judge. Especially after my father's reaction
One reason to cut is that physical pain is less intense than emotional pain, but very real. I always got a rush of endorphins when i used a needle to puncture my skin. It almost feels like pressure has been let off. Plus the brain reacts to any kind of injury and begins pumping adrenaline and other chemicals that make you feel better throughout the body. I dont do it anymore and wouldnt recommend it just in case someone saw it and got the wrong idea. Plus i promised my husband i wouldnt.
