I have been feeling like leaving WP lately, and become an internet lurker like I used to be, before getting here.

In the US you can go to Dept of Economics Voc Rehab and they will send you for a free neuropsychological exam. It cost around $2300 is what I was told and otherwise I would have never gone to one. Course I already had a diagnosis from my GP and a neurologist, but Voc said it needed an "official" dx from a neuropsych.

Ah. I'm in Australia, not the US. Thanks for the info, though.

There have been studies claiming that watching too many shows like Oprah is bad for your mental and emotional well-being. I wonder if reading post after post on this site which repeat the same themes is equally as bad.

When I first figured out this AS thing, this site was an awesome and invaluable source. It was sooo great to read posts others had made about AS related issues. But after a while, I noticed that 70% of the posts were really about one or more of the following topics:

1. I'm misunderstood
2. I hate NT's
3. The world should change to suit my personal desires and beliefs

After awhile, I'm not sure the constant streams of pity, wallowing, or frustration with NTs, are things that should be read over and over again day after day. Is that really good for mental and emotional well-being? Does that challenge or motivate people to change for the better? I know there are always exceptions, etc... But for the average aspie, I'm not sure the constant barrage of these topics is a good thing.

Also, it seems that some people have turned WP into a platform for a future AS separatist movement.

sometimes I feel like I have left, but my orbit brings me in close enough to be able to keep an eye on a few mature, goal oriented members.

Can't say I feel like leaving. But I'll leave when I do feel like leaving.

I arrived unexpected and unannounced and I'll leave the same way.

I live my life and when I have free time I am on here. I have a good balance and I will not cut back my time.

There is no such thing as a US Department of Economics. If you are poor enough, you can go to your state rehabilitation agency, which may be associated with an economic development program or a state employment program. But you do have to meet income qualifications, or have a status already such as being on medicaid or SSI, to get free services in most states. Social services programs vary wildly from state to state - some are pretty good (Wisconsin, Oregon) and some are abysmal (most of the deep south and Texas).

Good luck.

No offense, but there are a lot of very young people here. Teens and young adults tend to have the 3 traits you mention (substitute some other group for NTs) very commonly, across all diagnoses, from my experience. That goes with the transformation from child to adulthood, and isn't anything spectacularly associated with being Aspie. Just look at what you'll find on MySpace or any other teen blogosphere place. [As my daughter says OMFG, Get Over It!! !! when she reads any of those - but she only says that now that she's older and not a part of it anymore.] In other words, welcome to the world of "teen angst", compounded by some extra baggage.

No, it's probably not good to dwell solely on it. But I think that some folks get at least a little comfort from knowing that others are going through similar phases in their lives. My concern is that a lot of the folks here are mistaking the normal developmental stuff as being caused by being Aspie. It's not. It's due to being a human who has to sort out the world and whose brain is developing and changing. They'd have to deal with a great part of it all anyway. Aspieness just changes the flavor, sometimes slightly, sometimes a little more definitely, but the basic thing is still there to deal with.

The catch is, I think, that as for any support group, it's not wise to make this place your world. It's a resource, maybe even a resource guide, but it's not the "real" world that we all have to live in. I've sat through "support group" and "therapy group" meetings in the past, long before anyone ever used the term Aspergers Syndrome, and the one rule they always had was that you do not associate with the people in the groups when you are not meeting for the group's purpose. That's a very good rule, and evolved for a reason - you can potentially become spiritually/socially/emotionally inbred if you do, and that's not really helpful in getting on with your life.

So, I guess I'm saying that the place is good when you need it, and can use it, but that you shouldn't substitute it for your life. Or even take it as a representation of reality. And, chances are that you'll outgrow/learn to cope with/no longer experience most of your current miseries, if you've got 'em, someday regardless of diagnosis.

Best wishes - N

This is a state agency in the state of Arizona. In other states it may be known as "Social Services" or "Child and Family Services" or "Health and Human Services" or some such. In some states, employment issues are dealt with separately, in some, as in this state, they are lumped in with this particular agency's mission. In some states, vocational rehab is also a separate entity from the employment development agency. In any event, the org listed above is independent of federal control, other than any grant or direct allocation money it receives for various programs may have some minimal standards attached. It is not a US Department of Economics. There is no such creature (as the latter) at the federal level. Thus, there are at least 50 different agencies, possibly more if DC and the Virgin Islands and other US territories are factored in, that could potentially deal with the original question in the USA. It would depend on where the person lived. The rules are not the same across state lines, with the exception of qualifying for medicare or federal social security disability.
