I feel weird now I've thought about that.

This sounds strange but never mind.

Anyway, a few years ago now (I hadn't even heard of wrongplanet then), I went shopping with a group of NT friends (one has an aspie for a little brother). I had made a mental list of what I was going to buy.

I noticed that my friends were ummm...buying stuff as they went along, apparently without a clue as to what they needed. Or they'd buy stuff at the checkout.

The placement of goods didn't appear to work on me though.

And I just thought about that.

It just seemed/seems odd.

I always have a shopping list written down. I have a book that I take with me out where I write lists of things that I want to do/buy on that day.

its the same with socialising!

They can talk about seemingly nothing at all, for hours, and I swear every time I either get lost in the tones of their voices, some particular aspect in the environment, or my own thoughts. I can only talk in a group on certain (though getting more and more as I grow) topics.

Mothers, whether NT or aspie, usually have a list when they go grocery shopping.

I think buying stuff at random is a single male phenomenon.

These are female NT friends. They bought stuff at random in addition to the list.

I got a few things that keeps my shopping easy. I do not have car. I am not going
to push a cart in the store. I pretty much can not eat most foods (trans fats, sat fats
high sodium, bored of most things to). That means I buy like 3 items at a time usually snack
items like nuts, dried fruit, pasta, peanut butter, garlic, olive oil, sour gummy worms
vitamins(I can not think of anything I buy regular)
--------
tea, splendia, just came to mind

If things are really important that I buy them, I make a list. Otherwise, I have a mental list (easier to read) that I use when I am buying things. Of course, there is always a slight chance that I will buy something for someone else (or myself occasionally) without having planned and thought everything out thoroughly.

If I don't make a list, I generally don't remember what I need, even if I say it out loud before going.
The better the list (especially if I studied a cookbook and made a menu for a few days) the less miscellaneous stuff I'll buy. I buy extra stuff, not based on placement in the store (displays, ad) but cravings. Like, I'll see the frozen aisle and think, "Ice Cream!" or the candy aisle and think, "Chocolate bars!".
Deli sections are bad too, I'll buy a sandwich instead of ingredients.
I also buy a lot of store brand items, rather than brand name. It cuts down on the image imprinting.

I usually make a mental list of what I want to buy. Then I go down the list, making sure I have all the items in a cart. I never bought anything because of the way it was placed in a store; I also buy mental items based on cravings. For me, they usually consist of sushi, spicy pretzels, beer, or beef jerky.

My Mother and I stock up on live yogurts, herbal teas, vegetables (and not just plain old tomatoes and lettuce either), fruits (papaya all the way!) and extra lean meat and fish (salmon!! MACKEREL!). My Mother and I are herbal-tea-drinking-supplement-taking-fruit-eating health freaks. XD

I cannot go out without my notebook though.

THAT'S why stores hire placement gurus!! ! To put stuff out where NT's will buy it. It's pathetic, to say the least!! ! I go into a grocery with products in mind, and mapped out as to where something is on which aisle. (I get confused with the array of products, and if the store changes where something is located, I have to ask a clerk.) I never buy something because it's placed at the right height. Or in the bleeding aisles on those little cardboard racks I always bump into.

ARRRGGGGHHHHH ! !! !!

Ach! I agree, they are EXTREMELY annoying!

I cannot stand convenience foods like ready meals; they contain so much RUBBISH!

I have a list of foods that I simply refuse to eat (part of my AS), which I submit as part of my dietary requirements whenever I go on school trips (I often get odd glances), and it includes things like white bread, mayonnaise, eggs, crisps and chocolate bars. I also don't drink alcohol, but that's because I don't believe that alcohol is a necessary ingredient for enjoyment.

I like to buy healthy foods, such as produce and whole grains. I'll also be buying small amounts of lean meats, after I've moved out in a few days. I buy scratch n wins, but those are far and few, between

SteelMaiden, do you refuse to eat these foods to help with your concentration? Or do you just avoid them because you don't like them?

I get overloaded every time I'm in a grocery store. Too much stuff, too many (annoying) people, too many colours, too loud, I could go on. So, I have to make a list. I figure that if I had a seeing eye dog and blocked off my sight and hearing somehow, I could remember everything I went there to buy. Even when I go shopping for clothes or gifts I have to make a list, there are just to many distracting conditions when I shop anywhere for me to be completely mindful of why I'm there. I feel like a 'fish out of water'.

I avoid them because I don't like them. In fact, I don't like them so much that they make me ill. But as you are talking about concentration, I eat fish, pulses and take flaxseed oil and omega 3, 6 and 9 supplements to aid my concentration. I am also on a low sugar diet due to my past hyperactivity. Fish, fruit and vegetables are things that I have grown up on!
