I have an information sheet written out to let other people know what is going on - I'm not going to post it here, as is is quite long, and I don't have it posted up anywhere else so I can't link to it. If anyone is interested, let me know, and I will put it up via Mediafire or similar. Those that h...

Forum: Social Skills and Making Friends   Topic: I HATE Screaming Children, Crying Babies and Barking Dogs

I had to hit "ALL", as the two sounds I hate most are crying babies and screaming children. Barking dogs are not as bad, but can still cause problems after a while. What is really hard to get across to people is that it is not the child I hate, but the noise . I know a baby can't help crying but I a...

One of the reasons that police officers are likely to pay attention to anyone "different" is that they are actually trained to. I encounter trainee officers regularly, I have seen the information they are given with regards to spotting someone potentially under the influence of any substances. The b...

Working as a lifeguard. The pool complex was basically a giant greenhouse, so bright light streaming in all the time. In addtion there was the noise level (horrible!), screaming kids, and changing shift patterns. The guests were continually rude and seemed to regard lifeguards as a free babysitting ...

When I was applying for post-grad study, we were actually told that studying at the same institution could get you "marked down" in interviews. The way to spin it is that whole " working with different people in a new and challenging environment " thing that employers seem to like so much. I am stay...

I get extra time, I should get a separate (distraction free) room, additional help with notes and the option to type my papers (those who have ever seen my handwriting will know why... ). If there are accomodations available, use them! They are there to "level out" the field, giving you the "same" c...

Yup. The few people I actually get on with are pretty much all "weird" in one way or another!

Arrgh! I hate people touching my stuff! It's not so much them touching it, exactly, it's the fact that it doesn't seem to occur to most people to ask before they just grab for it. It's almost as if a lot of folks thnk that if they can see it, it's fair game, even if it's not theirs. I have no proble...

I am still in the middle of getting a diagnosis, but I had to explain what is going on to some of the staff at the University. Turns out they had already guessed! The guy that is working with me from DSU said that it is really obvious if you know what you are looking at, so they had all already star...

Unfortunatly, there is no age limit to bullying behaviour. Although a large amount happens at school level, and most people think that is the end of it, it can carry on at work, or at any other point in life. This site has some useful information on trying to deal with it: http://www.bullyonline.org/

Happens to me too. It actually seems to work by my stutter getting so bad that the words just don't "work" at all. It's incredibly frustrating - I hadn't realised how difficult it is to get a point across to someone who is not used to non-verbal comms. if you can't talk! I usually have a notebook or...

The only way to describe me seems to be "funny wiring"!

Hmm, interesting! I will have to bug my optician about it next time I see him! Maybe they will take the whole light-sensitive thing more seriously if I wave diagnostic paperwork at them.... Generally-tinted lenses would help, but are a nighmare for photography! Am supposed to research coloured lense...

Whilst I have no experience of "social skills training", joining a club or society has been a way to interact that often works. With the "pre-loaded" subject, at least you should have something in common with others at the event. This might make interaction a little easier. Although the idea is prob...

I'm hopeless. I just don't notice if a guy is flirting until he puts his arm around me...at which point I usually panic! Apparently, a friend of mine flirted with me for a couple of years, and I just didn't get it! I generally have to assume that someone is just being nice, since who would really be...
