Let’s face it: you can solve the puzzle of “the greatest good for the greatest number” with +1 for the existence of god, or with 0. Occam’s Razor will give you the answer.

The question “Are the human race worthy of survival?” is simplified a little once that’s done, but still a question.

Looks like you may have to abandon Sibelius. Or keep a cheap Windows machine just for it. At all costs, escape the evil empire of Microsoft. I’ve used Ubuntu many times, and my 20 year old iMac currently runs Linux Mint. You don’t need to know the deep tech stuff. They're comfortable for normal huma...

I’ve hated Windows forever. When Bill was signing his first deal with IBM, I was writing system software for the first (and last) Australian microcomputer. As my second son was born, that company evaporated. Enough of that. Now I’m retired, still bitter, and running Linux Mint on a twenty year old i...

It’s a shame to see a worthwhile post sink into obscurity. I read Rocket’s draft, and for the first time in twenty years since diagnosis I felt a little bit less alone. So, if you’re bent that way, let the man know and tell him what you think of his work. If you’re not, keep the thread alive by post...

It’s easy to be critical from a safe distance, but there’s a slim chance that when he’s done dismantling the American state the rest of us will avoid heat death long enough to feel safer. A very slim chance…

I was struck yesterday by the notion that there were two distinct styles of reading: by words, which used auditory machinery, and by meaning, using visual. Both deliver pictures to the visionary machine at the heart of intelligence, but that one’s work is outside most of our conscious thinking. Does...

On top of aaaaaall that, Trump is also a foreign intelligence asset, and he is being directly or indirectly led to destroy America's prestige and power for the benefit of its rivals. My phone provider offered me a free year of Perplexity. I love it. Hours of reading and contrasting search results reduced to seconds to produce well formatted, concise and consistent, documented response. Had I not retired years back from the programming rat race I might not be so happy? Who can te...

Maybe your account has been stolen. Maybe you’ve changed your number. Just create a new identity and rediscover the parts of the old that you want to.

Leave religion out of it - he can make his own determinations on that later. God won’t mind. The important thing is that you lot, the rest of the world, make judgments of him all the time on criteria he has no way of understanding. Yes, there are laws that say that shouldn’t happen, but there are la...

I used to write software. Interminably. I didn’t know anything about autism back then of course. Back in the seventies, being paid good money to be left alone to sit in a corner cutting code seemed like what god intended. Interpersonal relationships were an unexplored mystery. Now, a quarter century...

It’s an instinctive thing in neurotypical adults. Behaving right means having instantaneous face language response or “fight or flight” starts being triggered. Us poor freaks don’t meet the standard.

I’d ignored AI until recently - first, I replaced my iPad with the new M5 one and started playing with a toy called Draw Things which is a delight. Then my phone provider gave me a years subscription to Perplexity which is again a delight. I’ve been trying to enliven my retirement by exploring a few...
